While we do acknowledge Celine Dion’s love and devotion for her husband, more often than not, we do not give Rene Angelil as much credit as he deserves for being the partner of dreams. Dion met Angelil, a music producer for an audition when she was 12. And he was so impressed by her talent that he made it his dream mission to see Dion become one of the most cherished singers of the industry.
He believed in her talent so much that he had mortgaged his property to finance her album and took the teen and her mother on tour in Canada, Japan, and Europe, reports Good HouseKeeping. Gradually, Dion started achieving her much deserved success and behind her was her husband who supported her career as her manager and loved her, as her husband.
In fact, such was his commitment to his wife that he planned his own funeral before dying so his wife won’t have to. He knew that the mother of his children will be distraught after his death, therefore, he wanted to keep everything organized, claims USA Today.
But as a wife, during Angelil’s second battle with throat cancer, Dion was devastated to see her husband suffer every day. She wanted to do everything to bring him peace and make him realize that she is there for him. In 2015, when Angelil was fighting his last battle, Dion had a show which she refused to perform in because she wanted to be by his side. However, Angelil convinced her to perform because watching her do what she does best made him happiest.
“I didn’t want to be here at first,” the 52-year-old, told USA Today of how her husband of a lifetime pushed her to go. “But René really gave me a gift. All my grieving, it was during this last year. I think I’ve got this. For now. When it hits me, it’s going to hit me. But my biggest job is to tell my husband, we’re fine. I’ll take care of our kids. You’ll watch us from another spot.”
Angélil, 73 at the time, had been on a feeding tube for two years, and Dion tried to be strong during his lengthy illness. “I’ll say, ‘You’re scared? I understand. Talk to me about it,'” she said. “And René says to me, ‘I want to die in your arms.’ OK, fine, I’ll be there, you’ll die in my arms.”
And she was there by his side when he left the world, in fact, he assured him that they will be fine, so he could pass on in peace. I told him just before he left, ‘It’s going to be alright, don’t worry about anything, I got this I always trusted you’, he trusted me. We love each other so much. ‘No one deserves to suffer, you’ve done good, kid.'”
Years have passed since Angelil’s death but Dion has still not moved on from the memories they made together, in a good way. She has allowed them to fill her up with love and compassion for her late husband, her children, and her craft. In a recent interview with Andy Cohen, she said, “I do not date, I do not have a boyfriend. If I do find someone, great. If I don’t, great. Because I’m still in love, once you are in love so much… I have lived all my life with René, he is still within me. I see him through the eyes of my children every day. I’m so passionate about life. I’m so lucky to have my three beautiful children.”
Rene Angelil played his role as a supportive husband all his life and Celine Dion honored his love and memories by being by his side and loving him back with all she had. If this doesn’t inspire cynics to fall in love, what will?
